Many Spanish companies have had serious problems because they could not arrange visas-time customers who had to travel to Spain. In other cases foreign companies have invested in Spain have faced difficulties in processing visas and technical managers who have to come to work in their offices or factories. Complaints are often transmitted on the operation of business visas to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This tends to respond with good words, but that is usually all.
It is not a problem unique to Spain, but the sense among Spanish companies is that the theme works better in other countries, and are at a disadvantage compared to its competitors.
The experience of other countries can provide interesting ideas. For example, a group of Canadian business organizations recently published a paper (“Facilitating Business Travel to Canada”), with ideas and suggestions are worth considering.
The role of Canadian organizations identified the following major problems in connection with business visas, a problem that will be very familiar to many Spanish companies.
1. Delays. “Companies have mentioned numerous cases of canceled visits and missed business opportunities because visas were not available on time. Business visitors, as a rule, are assigned the same priority, when processing their visa applications for tourists and other visitors who are not businessmen. “
2. Lack of predictability. Companies do not know whether to grant the visa or how long it will take in processing. This difficulty organizing activities, especially when they have visitors from different countries participate.
3. Excessive and intrusive demands for information. Are often required of foreign visitors to provide information on personal issues that may conflict with their right to privacy or their customs.
4. Biased policies of refusal of visas. There is a perception that it discriminates against requests for certain regions such as Africa, compared with others.
5. Lack of access to officials who make decisions. Companies that sponsor a visit frequently have no access to officials who make decisions with visas. They have the opportunity to clarify doubts or to qualify the importance of the visit. This is particularly frustrating when the visa is rejected without having had an opportunity to defend.
