Go to College or Start a Business? The Choice is Harder Than You Think

So you’re a high school graduate, and now you’re dealing with a tough decision: Do you go to college, or do you start a business? In the past decade or so, more and more lucrative businesses are proving to have been started by college drop-outs (or entrepreneurs that never went to college in the first place). In the past, a college degree was seen as an absolutely necessary achievement if you wanted to be successful. But now, it doesn’t seem to be such a necessity. So how do you decide—should you go to college, or should you start up a business?

One of the biggest factors being considered is the cost of college tuition. While college can provide you with countless networking and professional opportunities, it comes at quite a cost. Tuition has quadrupled since the 1980s, and according to the Federal Reserve, student debt is approaching the $1 trillion mark. That’s a whole lot of debt.

Another factor to consider is this: How well-paying are professions associated with your college major? Many times, English or theatre majors will find themselves waiting tables in order to pay off their hefty student debts simply because they have a hard time finding a job—or the job they have doesn’t pay enough to cover all of their bills. There are undoubtedly many college graduates that feel as though their degrees aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

On the other hand, a college education can be invaluable for the scholar that simply loves to learn. And—let’s be honest—it’s downright necessary for some professions such as law or medicine.

And look at all of the businesses that have been thriving and were started by people without college degrees—Microsoft, Facebook, and Dell come to mind. If you have the motivation and the dedication, starting a business could be your quick way to doing something you love and making a living at it.

The final decision rests in your hands. If you’re torn between starting up a business or pursuing a college degree, weigh your options and go with the choice that seems to make the most sense—and that gets you the most excited.
