The Chelsea Hotel, controlled mainly by three families who were his masters for 65 years, will remain a haven for artists despite changes hands, a spokesman said Tuesday.

“The same story makes the hotel what it is,” said Loren Riegelhaupt. “Anyone who wants to buy the Chelsea knows what it is Chelsea, and nobody will want to change (that)” he said, adding that there was a sale price.

A partial list of guests who stayed there include writers Clarke, O. Henry and Thomas Wolfe, the playwright Arthur Miller, the artist Andy Warhol and musicians Janis Joplin, Jami Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

Nancy Sponge, girlfriend of Sid Vicious punk musician, the Sex Pistols, died there in 1978 in the midst of a fight after the two consumed drugs, and the Chelsea Hotel is where Bob Dylan, according to your own handwriting, wrote “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.”

The hotel’s 12 floors and 250 rooms was built in 1883, 23 street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue in a part of town called Chelsea, who was then the theater district. It now houses a concentration of art galleries and is one of the most famous gay districts of the city.

The maintenance of the old building required an investment of 2 to 3 million dollars in recent years to renovate 25 rooms and the lobby, said Riegelhaupt.

“This is the time to let a new owner, perhaps with some innovative ideas and resources to revitalize the Chelsea,” said Paul Bronstein, shareholder and member of the board of the hotel, in a statement.
